You must have heard that to study MBBS abroad, students need to check whether their choicest universities are recognized by MCI (Medical Council of India), WHO and other such governing bodies or not. MCI is that governing body in India that is in-charge of maintaining high standards of medical education in the country. Another vital function of MCI is that it approves those degrees that are granted to students in foreign medical universities before they can begin practicing in India.
There are some vital MCI rules for MBBS abroad. These are:
1. Students who are interested to study MBBS in abroad universities, must have their NEET qualifying scorecard which is the eligibility certificate for the applicant. This is so because MCI no longer issues Eligibility Certificates for abroad-going students.
2. The medical aspirant must know the university’s status of medical qualification from MCI as well as the fee structure from the concerned university/college.
3. According to the MCI rules for MBBS abroad, no student shall be allowed to take the Screening Test for the registration in India unless the applicant produces the Eligibility Certificate issued by MCI. This is for students who have taken admission before May 2018 and those who have taken admission after May 2018, must have the NEET scorecard.
4. In 2018, some students could not qualify NEET but were allowed to study in abroad medical universities. Such students must get Eligibility Certificates from MCI. While students who qualified NEET 2018, can treat their NEET scorecard as their Eligibility Certificate.
5. The applicant must be 17 years or above on/before 31st December of the year of admission. He/she must also clear NEET before getting admitted in his/her choicest abroad medical universities.
How to make an application for the Eligibility Certificate?
You need to visit the official website of MCI where the format for the application is mentioned. After the application is completed, submit it with the original mark sheet of the previous qualifying examination and with the photocopies of the documents. Besides, you also need to submit a Demand Draft of a specific amount that is mentioned in the website of MCI, in favour of the Secretary, Medical Council of India, New Delhi. If a candidate fails to produce a document that doesn’t have the applicant’s date of birth, he/she must provide a government document that has the birth date.
The Medical Council of India has the further right to verify the submitted documents. In case the documents are found to be fake/false, the council can deny providing the eligibility certificate. Should the certificate get already issued to the student, it will be considered as invalid.
For a candidate who belongs to the reserved category, he/she must submit a certificate mentioning the same.
It is only when the council has verified the submitted documents and has approved it, then the candidate is allowed to receive the Eligibility Certificate and the medical degree from the abroad medical university.
Any a student who has completed his/her medical course from abroad university needs to appear for the screening test held by MCI. It is only after clearing this test that he/she can receive permanent registration to practice in India.
The eligibility criteria for MBBS course are:
·         The student must have attended a continuous 12 years of study.
·         The student must pass 10+2 of any recognized board (West Bengal Board, ICSE, CBSE or others) with the minimum qualifying marks in PCB (Physics, Chemistry and Biology).
